A lifelong resident of Laurel, he completed his education in local schools before pursuing higher studies at Jones County Junior College. In 1970, he earned a degree in Business Administration with a focus on marketing from the University of Southern Mississippi.

Joe began his career as a bookkeeper in Jackson before joining his father, Howard Johnson, in the real estate business. In 1980, he founded Howard Johnson Properties LLC, where he serves as a licensed Real Estate Broker and Certified General Appraiser. His extensive expertise spans various real estate sectors, including residential, commercial, industrial, agricultural, and timberland, as well as subdivision lot sales.

An active member of Highland Baptist Church in Laurel, Joe enjoys outdoor activities alongside his wife, Jean. Their shared interests include attending fall football games, traveling, and gardening. They also cherish quiet moments on their screened porch with their dog, Charlie.
