About William Richard
Bill Richard is a dedicated real estate professional currently serving on the NSDCAR board as a representative for the Central Coast area. This marks his inaugural year on the board, where he brings over 15 years of experience emceeing the NSDCAR marketing sessions, where properties are showcased. In addition, he has contributed to the Professional Standards Committee at NSDCAR.
Before his career in real estate, Bill spent 13 years as a senior pastor at a Calvary Chapel church, which began at Torrey Pines High School in Del Mar and later moved to Encinitas. Reflecting on this pivotal moment, Bill stated, “I felt a divine calling to leave my sales career and serve the community.” Under his leadership, the congregation grew from 30 to approximately 300 members.
Prior to his pastoral work, Bill had a successful 13-year tenure as a top West Coast sales representative for companies such as Hilti International and Lawson Products. He achieved a six-figure income during this time. “I’ve sold everything necessary for construction,” Bill remarked. He recounted a notable experience where he hand-delivered a small order of nuts and bolts to a military client, which ultimately led to a $100,000 order—one of the largest in his company’s history.
Bill began his academic journey at St. Joseph’s University, initially aspiring to become a doctor. However, he soon realized that his colorblindness would pose challenges in that field. “While it may have limited my surgical ambitions, it has its advantages in other situations,” he noted.
Originally from Cherry Hill, New Jersey, Bill grew up in Camden. He met his wife, Janice, at a high school dance when he was 17 and she was 15. “We met in the middle of the gym floor and danced; the rest is history,” he shared. After five years of dating, they married in 1974 and recently celebrated their anniversary in December. Two years later, they relocated to California.
In 1988, Bill became involved in Bible studies at a burgeoning church. Despite achieving numerous sales awards and mentoring young sales representatives, he felt a calling to pursue pastoral work. “A pastor friend encouraged me, and it was a transformative experience,” he explained, although he eventually stepped back from the role of senior pastor.
In 2000, Bill made the difficult decision to disband his church, recognizing the challenges of competing with larger congregations. “It was a tough choice, especially with four children approaching college age,” he admitted. He sought guidance from God, who reminded him of his primary responsibility to his family. This led him to transition into real estate sales, following in the footsteps of his mother, Trudy Richard, who sold real estate in North County from 1983 to 2005. Bill is one of eight siblings, and his brother Bob also works in the real estate sector in Carlsbad.
In his first year in real estate, Bill hosted 92 open houses, resulting in 51 transactions. He has worked with various real estate firms as both an agent and a trainer before founding Richard Realty Group and Realty Groups San Diego in Carlsbad. Today, his companies employ around 60 agents. “If a man works, he eats; it’s that simple,” Bill stated, recalling a biblical verse that motivates him, especially during challenging times. He believes that perseverance often leads to unexpected rewards.
Bill is also committed to his involvement with NSDCAR, stating, “One of the greatest assets we have in North County is our Association. NSDCAR has been instrumental in helping me grasp the fundamentals of our profession.” He emphasizes that true understanding of real estate comes from active participation and service.
