Ben holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree with a concentration in real estate from Baylor University, where he graduated in May 1988. His academic background is complemented by his experience as a flanker on the Baylor Bears football team from 1983 to 1988. He remains actively involved with the university, having served as a past director of the Baylor B Club and currently volunteering with the Baylor Black Alumni Association. In addition, Ben is a year-round volunteer basketball coach for the Plano Sports Authority and coaches at the Frisco Fieldhouse, while also supporting his children's schools through various volunteer efforts.

A native of Plano, Texas, Ben was inducted into the Panther Football Hall of Fame at Plano East High School in 2006. He and his family currently reside in Far North Dallas.
