About Bernard Engert

Bernard Thomas Engert III, known as Brett to family, friends, and clients, hails from New Orleans and was raised in Harahan. A graduate of De La Salle High School, he spent two years at Louisiana State University before returning home to work at the renowned Commander’s Palace. There, he had the opportunity to collaborate with culinary legends such as Paul Prudhomme, Emeril Lagasse, and Ella Brennan, which instilled in him a deep appreciation for exceptional customer service and a commitment to excellence.

Driven by a desire to explore, Brett relocated to California, where he gained extensive experience in the restaurant industry from Los Angeles to San Francisco. In 1996, he established Oswald Bistro, which quickly became one of Santa Cruz’s leading dining establishments. After successfully selling the restaurant in 2003—an establishment that continues to thrive—he embraced the island lifestyle in Oahu. It was in Hawaii that he partnered with contractor Young Kim, immersing himself in the complexities of home building and renovation for five years.

In 2008, Brett returned to New Orleans to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with a pre-law concentration at the University of New Orleans, all while actively volunteering with Habitat for Humanity. With a robust background in customer service, business contract law, and construction, he recognized that a career in real estate was the natural progression for him. He chose to align himself with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Preferred REALTORS, where his local roots, extensive hospitality experience, and knowledge of residential construction position him as a highly qualified real estate professional.

Major Orleans County, Louisiana Real Estate Markets

New Orleans dominates the Orleans County real estate landscape, with distinct neighborhoods like the French Quarter, Garden District, and Marigny commanding premium prices due to their historic charm and tourism appeal. The Warehouse District has emerged as a hotspot for luxury condominiums and loft conversions, while areas like Mid-City and Bywater have experienced significant gentrification, attracting young professionals and investors seeking authentic New Orleans character at more accessible price points.

Suburban markets within Orleans County, including areas like New Orleans East and Algiers, offer different investment profiles entirely. These regions provide more affordable housing options and have seen steady appreciation as the city's population continues recovering and growing. The proximity to downtown New Orleans, combined with ongoing infrastructure improvements, makes these areas increasingly attractive to first-time homebuyers and families seeking value.

Market Dynamics and Geographic Complexity

Orleans County's real estate market operates under unique constraints and opportunities shaped by its geography and climate considerations. Elevation maps and flood zones play crucial roles in property valuations, with higher ground commanding premium prices. The market has also adapted to incorporate resilience features, with buyers increasingly prioritizing properties with hurricane-resistant construction and flood mitigation systems.

Seasonal fluctuations tied to tourism create distinctive patterns in both residential and commercial markets. Short-term rental properties have become a significant market segment, particularly in historic neighborhoods, while commercial real estate benefits from the city's position as a major convention and entertainment destination. This complexity requires deep local knowledge that experienced agents provide to navigate successfully.
