Burton Wilkins, a native of Moorestown, New Jersey, completed his high school education at Moorestown High School in 1972. He furthered his academic pursuits at Fordham University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1976. Following his graduation, Burton began his career in the accounting and finance sector, working for the corporate office of Intercontinental Hotels in New York City.

In 1978, he transitioned to the hospitality industry as the General Manager of the Port-O-Call Hotel, relocating to Ocean City as a permanent resident. His journey in real estate commenced in 1988 when he obtained his Real Estate Sales Associate license. Shortly thereafter, he joined a prominent real estate firm in Ocean City, where he served as Vice President and owner. By 1990, he had achieved his GRI designation and secured his Real Estate Broker's license.

In 1998, Burton established Goldcoast Realty, which evolved into Goldcoast Sotheby's International Realty a decade later. His leadership in the real estate community is underscored by his tenure as President of the Ocean City Board of Realtors in 1997 and being named Realtor of the Year in 1999. He has consistently ranked among Ocean City's top producers, receiving Circle of Excellence Awards annually since 1988, with recent sales figures ranging from $15 million to $30 million.
