He graduated from Marysville High School and went on to earn degrees in Electrical Engineering and Engineering Management from the University of the Pacific.

In 2006, Derek and his brother Brian established the Sandgren Real Estate Group, specializing in single-family, multi-family, and commercial properties. Since its inception, the team has successfully closed over 1,000 transactions, positioning them among the top-performing real estate teams in the region. Committed to community engagement, Derek and Brian actively support local schools and events, and Derek has held the role of Association President.
