About Gail Smart

Gail, the President and Principal Broker of Blowing Rock Properties Inc., is a lifelong resident of North Carolina, having grown up in Rutherfordton before relocating to Blowing Rock in 1970. She earned her degree in psychology from Appalachian State University, graduating magna cum laude, after attending Wake Forest University.

Before entering real estate, Gail spent several years as a counselor with Vocational Rehabilitation. In pursuit of adventure, she sold her possessions and embarked on a six-year sailing journey through the Bahamas and the Caribbean aboard a vintage Zeeland yawl. During this time, she gained valuable sales experience as a top-performing agent for a local tour operator in St. Thomas.

Upon her return to Blowing Rock in 1986, Gail transitioned into the real estate sector, founding Blowing Rock Properties in 1991. Her diverse interests include travel, nature conservation, green building, dogs, ACC basketball, hiking, pottery collection, and supporting her 82-year-old mother’s active lifestyle. Her daughter, Kimberly, also resides and works in the Blowing Rock area.

With over 23 years of experience in various aspects of real estate, Gail has successfully listed and sold a wide range of properties. She has also engaged in land development, investment properties, and vacation rentals. Currently, she serves on the Professional Standards Committee for the High Country Association of Realtors and holds a license as a general contractor.

Gail expresses her passion for her work and the beauty of the North Carolina mountains: “I can’t believe it’s been almost 24 years—I still love what I do and this special spot on the planet. As much as I enjoy traveling, nothing is better than coming back home to the North Carolina mountains.”
