About James Shaw

Jim Shaw, a proud native of Mars Hill, Maine, has deep roots in Aroostook County, the largest and northernmost county in the state. Mars Hill is notable for its scenic mountain, which was the site of the first 50-star flag raising on July 4, 1960, marking Hawaii's admission to the Union.

After earning a Bachelor of Arts in Pre-Med Biology from Gordon College in Wenham, Massachusetts, Jim returned to Aroostook County to uphold his family's legacy in agriculture, particularly in cultivating the renowned "Maine" potatoes across several family-owned farms. His family business also included a well-regarded packing plant and a brokerage firm.

Jim's commitment to education became evident during his tenure as a school board member, where he identified a need for reform in the teaching profession. Driven by a desire to make learning more engaging, especially in Science and Math, he dedicated eight years to teaching at the middle and high school levels. During this time, he integrated advanced technology into his curriculum to enhance student engagement. Additionally, he served as President and CEO of a network marketing company that introduced WebTV to households nationwide, providing families with internet access through their televisions.

With a diverse background and a strong desire to assist others, Jim transitioned into real estate, bringing his enthusiasm and commitment to the field. Recognizing the significance of homeownership, he founded Northern Maine Realty in January 2003 after two successful years at Aroostook Real Estate in Presque Isle. Located at 52 Main Street in Mars Hill, his agency specializes in providing professional buyer and seller representation. Since its inception, Northern Maine Realty has consistently achieved impressive sales volumes, surpassing $8 million in 2006.

In mid-2006, Jim expanded his business by opening a branch office in Houlton, appointing Sam Henderson, a local native, as the office manager. Sam's competitive spirit has contributed to the branch's success. In 2012, Greg Miller, a seasoned Remax agent, joined the Houlton office, further enhancing the agency's dynamic marketing approach. Jim's wife, Debbie, recently transitioned from her nursing career to obtain her Associate Broker license, assisting in the Mars Hill office.

For those looking to buy, sell, or relocate, the Northern Maine Realty team is eager to provide support. Jim, Sam, Greg, and Debbie are dedicated to ensuring that the process is positive and rewarding.

In 2007, Jim embarked on a personal real estate project, developing luxury rental cabins nestled within a Christmas tree plantation against the backdrop of Mars Hill Mountain. These cabins, known as "MY Sunset Cabins," were sold to Mike and Alicia Lento in 2021.

In his leisure time, Jim enjoys tending to his Christmas tree plantations, nurturing balsam fir and Fraser fir trees, and maintaining his connection to the agricultural roots that have shaped his life.

Aroostook County, Maine represents one of the most unique real estate markets in New England, spanning an enormous 6,672 square miles that makes it larger than Connecticut and Rhode Island combined. Despite its vast size, this northernmost county operates with a surprisingly intimate real estate community of just 100 actively licensed agents, all of whom maintain email contact information, creating an unusually connected and accessible professional network.

The market here defies typical real estate conventions, where agricultural land, forestry properties, and rural residential homes dominate transactions rather than suburban subdivisions. Potato farming heritage still influences property values significantly, with many listings featuring century-old farmhouses alongside modern agricultural facilities, creating a distinctive blend of historical preservation and working land opportunities.

Major Aroostook County, Maine Real Estate Markets

Presque Isle serves as the county's commercial hub, driving the most active residential market with properties ranging from $80,000 starter homes to $300,000 executive properties near the university. Caribou and Fort Fairfield follow as secondary markets, where cross-border proximity to New Brunswick creates unique opportunities for international buyers seeking recreational properties or agricultural investments.

The smaller communities of Houlton, Madawaska, and Van Buren each maintain distinct market personalities, with Houlton benefiting from its border crossing location, Madawaska attracting French-Canadian buyers, and Van Buren offering some of the most affordable waterfront properties in Maine along the St. John River.

Market Dynamics and Geographic Complexity

Aroostook County's real estate market operates on seasonal rhythms that differ dramatically from coastal Maine, with spring potato planting and fall harvest cycles influencing both listing availability and buyer activity. Winter properties often sell at significant discounts, not due to condition issues, but because buyers struggle to envision the dramatic transformation that occurs during the brief but intense growing season.

Distance creates fascinating pricing anomalies, where properties just 30 miles apart can vary by 40% in value due to proximity to services, employment centers, or recreational amenities. The county's 100 agents have developed specialized knowledge of these micro-markets, often covering territories spanning multiple towns and requiring deep understanding of agricultural zoning, timber rights, and cross-border regulations.

Why Businesses Need Aroostook County, Maine Agent Contact Data

Mortgage lenders, home inspection services, and construction companies targeting this market need direct access to all 100 agents because referral patterns here operate differently than urban markets. Agents frequently collaborate across vast distances, sharing clients and expertise in ways that make every licensed professional a potential business partner rather than just a subset of the market.

Agricultural equipment dealers, renewable energy companies, and rural internet providers find particular value in connecting with these agents, who serve as informal economic development ambassadors for their communities. Since every agent maintains email contact, businesses can efficiently reach this entire network to announce new services, seasonal promotions, or specialized financing programs tailored to Aroostook County's unique property types and buyer demographics.
