About Janet Markarian

Janet's journey began on the North Shore of Long Island, where she cultivated a deep appreciation for design and history. After earning her MFA in textile design, she was awarded a Fulbright Hays grant to study weaving in the Highland Andes. This experience led her to teach weaving and textile history at The School of The Art Institute of Chicago. Her career also included significant roles at prestigious institutions, such as the costume collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and as a textile conservator at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Janet later relocated to Hong Kong and Mainland China, where she established her own line of textiles. Upon returning to the United States, she and her husband fell in love with Orient Village on the North Fork, ultimately purchasing a historic 19th-century home on Village Lane, which housed a former barbershop. Here, Janet launched the Orient Linen Company, specializing in custom linens and vintage textiles. Her keen eye for beautiful homes quickly positioned her as a trusted resource in the local real estate market, both for sales and rentals.

With a solid foundation in design and a passion for local history and architecture, Janet naturally transitioned into real estate, becoming one of the North Fork's top producers. While she continues to manage her shop and nurture her garden, she remains actively involved in the community as a member of the Orient Yacht Club and a board member of Poquatuck Hall, an institution that holds special significance for her.
