Originally hailing from Pennsylvania, Joel relocated to North Carolina with his family in the late 1970s. Growing up in a small town near Winston-Salem, he enjoyed a vibrant childhood filled with friendships and activities. While he appreciated life in the Piedmont, his heart was always drawn to the coast. Annual beach vacations were insufficient, and frequent visits to his older brother at UNC Wilmington solidified his desire to make Wilmington his home.
