About John Gill

John, a fourth-generation Oregonian, has deep roots in the state, tracing his family lineage back to his great-great-grandfather, who journeyed along the Oregon Trail in the late 1800s and established a homestead in the Willamette Valley. His family's connection to the land includes ownership of several recreational properties in central Oregon, such as Camp Tamarack in the East Cascades, Indian Ford Guest Ranch near Sisters, and Rock Springs Guest Ranch near Bend.

For 25 years, John was both an owner and manager of Rock Springs Guest Ranch, a premier guest ranch and corporate retreat that hosted up to 50 guests. The ranch boasted a fleet of 70 horses and stewarded approximately 12,000 acres of public and private land. Over the years, it welcomed thousands of families from around the globe, many of whom returned annually, creating lasting memories and fostering a profound connection to the outdoors and ranch life. During his tenure, John also engaged in land development, successfully buying, selling, and developing hundreds of acres adjacent to the ranch. His expertise in land use planning is evident in his successful navigation of partitions, conditional use permits, and lot line adjustments.

In addition to his responsibilities at the ranch, John contributed to various boards. He served on the Tumalo Irrigation District board for nine years, including five years as chairman. His leadership in this role involved multiple trips to Washington, D.C., to secure funding for the modernization of the district's irrigation canals, providing him with valuable insights into water rights and water law.

John was also a dedicated member of the Dude Rancher’s Association (DRA) for twelve years, holding various officer positions, including President. The DRA, established in 1926, represents approximately 100 dude ranches across the western United States, aiming to preserve the unique ranching lifestyle and environment. His involvement allowed him to visit numerous ranches, further enriching his understanding of the industry.

In 2008, John successfully negotiated the sale of the guest ranch, which enabled him to embark on a year-and-a-half journey around the world with his wife and two young daughters.

With a lifelong passion for ranching and the outdoors, John has engaged in activities such as hunting, fishing, rafting, skiing, and horseback riding since childhood. He continues to own a 1,000-acre ranch along the lower Deschutes River, further solidifying his connection to Oregon's rich landscape.
