Originally from a military family, Laird moved to Canaan Valley, West Virginia, from Colorado in 1983. In 2005, he relocated to Morgantown after marrying his wife, Barbara. Together, they have three grown stepchildren and three teens, whom they adopted in 2009.

A former Rotarian and Paul Harris Fellow, Laird has a rich history in community engagement. He was recognized as West Virginia Tourism's Person of the Year in 2001 and was inducted into the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame in 2002 for his work as a professional mountain bike race promoter. Laird is actively involved in coaching within the newly established West Virginia high school mountain bike racing league. In his leisure time, he enjoys cross-country skiing, kayaking, rock climbing, and playing soccer.
