About Randolph Smith
A native of Sonoma County, this real estate professional brings a unique blend of diversity and extensive experience to the industry. With a background that includes roles as a truck driver, commercial fisherman, and biochemical geneticist, he possesses a multifaceted perspective on life and work. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Biology, a Master’s in Desert Ecology, and a Ph.D. in Genetics and Fishery Biology from the University of California, Davis. In 1984, he relocated to Nevada County with his wife, Meg Black-Smith.
His childhood was shaped by summers spent at a family cabin in Cisco, near the Highway 20/80 interchange, where he developed a passion for outdoor activities such as skiing, hiking, and fishing. When it came time for him and Meg to choose a place to settle, he knew exactly where they wanted to be. He continues to embrace his love for the outdoors with a seasonal ski pass at Northstar and enjoys fishing, hiking, and rock-hounding throughout the year. His consulting work on fishery projects spans Nevada County, the Southern Sierras, Canada, Mexico, and much of the western United States, and he even maintains his own trout stream. Additionally, he is an avid railroad enthusiast, owning an HO layout and appearing as a steam engineer in the Emmy-winning series "Celebrating North America's Steam Railways."
Throughout his career, he has received numerous accolades both within and outside the real estate sector. His achievements include awards for garden design, furniture making, and woodworking. He previously co-owned the Nevada City Brewery, where he earned ribbons for his beer at the Nevada County Fair. His dedication to excellence has been recognized by Century 21 and the Nevada County Association of REALTORS®, which have honored him with Quality Service Awards, Masters Club Certificates of Achievement, and Outstanding Producer Awards.
His journey into real estate began unexpectedly when he sought a permit to remodel a miners' cabin in Nevada City, only to discover it was classified as vacant land. This experience, coupled with a lack of diligence from their real estate agent, inspired him to ensure that he would always go above and beyond for his clients.
Influenced by his grandfather, who instilled values of integrity, hard work, and kindness, he approaches life with a sense of humor and a commitment to making a positive impact. One of his most significant and rewarding experiences has been designing and building his own home, a project that has deepened his understanding of the real estate process and enhanced his capabilities as a REALTOR®. He is passionate about helping clients achieve their aspirations and is dedicated to turning their dreams into reality.
