His journey in radio took him to Tokyo in the mid-1980s, and upon returning to the U.S., he embarked on an extensive backpacking adventure. Over 18 months, he explored nearly 20 countries, including China, Tibet, Thailand, Nepal—where he trekked to Everest Base Camp—India, Turkey, and various European nations, utilizing modes of travel ranging from planes to donkey carts.

In 2017, his daughter, Tessa Jania, joined his team. A graduate of Woodstock High School, the University of Illinois, and Loyola Chicago School of Law, Tessa holds a law degree and is a licensed Realtor. She actively contributes to the Heartland Realtor Organization as a member of the Contracts & Forms Committee.
