Originally from a small rural town in Illinois, Shea spent much of her youth outdoors and engaged in various sports, which led her to Eastern Illinois University. There, she earned a bachelor's degree in physical education while competing on the Women's track and field team for four years, followed by a master's degree in Sports Administration.

An avid athlete and competitor, Shea enjoys staying active with her family and cheering on her children at their sporting events. In her leisure time, she also indulges in reading, drawing, painting, and spending time with her English bulldog, Coco. A resident of Bloomington-Normal for 15 years, she appreciates the vibrant community and all it has to offer.
